A narrow Maxilla (upper jaw) does not provide enough space for the eruption of permanent teeth, particularly the canines.  By expanding the maxillary bone with a Palatal Expander during jaw development (Pre-Teens and Adolescents) we can widen the arch.  When combining it with traditional braces, we can create space for the proper alignment of teeth.  

Whether you choose metal braces or tooth colored braces, traditional fixed appliances (braces) are by far the best orthodontic treatment available to date.  Precise tooth movement and better results can be accomplished.  So, for those adults who have waited a long time before deciding to undergo treatment, the wiser choice for the demanding patient is clear... traditional braces, that is.

Upper front teeth protrusion is one of the most common dental problems we see in our practice.  The source of the problems relate to parafunctional habits, such as thumb-sucking, nail-biting, pacifier-sucking, among others.  In many cases, the pressure from the tongue while swallowing (Tongue Thrusting Habit) would also make the teeth protrude and create spaces between them, affecting the overall bite, its function and the smile.   A good reason to correct them early in life is to avoid fractures, since protruding teeth are more prone to trauma during sports and outdoor activities.

Traditional fixed orthodontic appliances (braces) allow us to level and align teeth, to correct a deep-bite where the lower teeth are totally covered by the upper front teeth.   An impinging overbite occurs when the lower teeth are biting and possibly traumatizing the anterior palate and the gums just behind the upper front teeth.  In many cases a temporary bite-plate is necessary to protect the palate until the bite is corrected with braces.

Around age 6, children will start shedding their primary teeth in the front and a new permanent molar will erupt just behind their baby second molar.  This is the ideal timing to evaluate and diagnose their bite and its development.  When a permanent tooth forms out of place (ectopic) it may not help the deciduous tooth to exfoliate so it remains (over-retained) until extracted.  

Early orthodontic intervention is necessary to eliminate imminent dental crowding during this stage.  It may required the extraction of some primary teeth to create room for the erupting permanent teeth.  In some cases, the extraction of a ...
